International education in New Zealand is not just bouncing back, it’s accelerating. According to the latest report from Education New Zealand (ENZ), the sector contributed NZ $4.52 billion in the year ended September 2025, a remarkable increase from NZ $3.6 billion just months earlier.

From January to August 2025, more than 83,500 international students enrolled with New Zealand education providers, a 14 % increase compared with the same period in 2024. That surge has already pushed total enrolments beyond last year’s full-year figures. New Zealand has announced several student visa updates for 2025–2026, including a new online system (ADEPT), extended work rights (25 hours per week), stricter rules on changing providers, and guidance for peak application periods. These changes aim to streamline processing and strengthen international education growth.

1. Visa Processing & Systems

Enhanced Immigration Online (ADEPT): From 18 August 2025, all student visa applications must be lodged through Immigration New Zealand’s upgraded online system. This is part of the Our Future Services programme, designed to reduce wait times and improve communication.
Peak Processing Period: October 2025 – March 2026 is the busiest season. Students are advised to apply at least 3 months before travel to avoid delays.

2. Work Rights

Increased Hours: From November 2025, eligible students can work 25 hours per week (up from 20).
Exchange & Study Abroad Students: All tertiary students on approved exchange or Study Abroad programmes, even for one semester, now have in-study work rights.
Holiday Work Rights: Continue to allow full-time work during scheduled breaks.

3. Eligibility & Compliance

Changing Providers or Study Level: Students who switch institutions or lower their level of study must apply for a new visa, not just a variation of conditions.
International Education Growth Plan: These changes align with New Zealand’s “Going for Growth” strategy, which aims to attract more students while managing immigration risks
